Always overestimate a little when you hire a skip
Work out how much waste you need to dispose before ordering skip hire services. Get a skip that’s too small for your waste disposal needs and you might need to unnecessarily hire another skip when the original skip is full.

Break down large waste items into smaller items
For example, an old wardrobe from a house clearance will take a lot less space in a skip if it was dismantled and sawn in half across the tallest parts. That way you could fit a couple more into the skip.

Access to the desired location
Before hiring a skip, ensure suitable access is available to drop the skip to where you need it. Skip trucks are about 9ft wide and 21ft long so they’ll need some room to manoeuvre about.

Be at home when the skip arrives
This ensures you can have the skip put exactly where you want it. Remember it will stay where it is put until it is time for it to be collected. The delivery driver will do his best to locate it where he thinks it should go, but if someone has parked their car in the ideal spot, there is little he can do.

Avoid leaving it empty for long
Remember the saying ‘nature abhors a vacuum’? An empty skip is a tempting place for someone else to rid themselves of their rubbish. If you don’t fill it, then someone else may well do it for you at night or while you are out.

Do not overload the skip
Whatever the amount you decide to put into the skip do not overload it, as the skip driver will refuse to uplift the skip due to health & safety and also his own license. If in the unlikely event that the driver deems the skip overloaded you’ll have to unload some of the stuff so he can safely take it away.

If you are hiring a skip for your home or business and need to place it on the road your will need a skip permit from the local council. Where possible, skips should not be placed on the highway, but if it is necessary then The Skip Company will apply for the skip license/road permit; however there are some areas where the local council requires the person who is hiring the skip to apply for the permit. The requirements are laid out in the Highways Act 1980: section 139 road traffic regulations act, 1984.

To save time, just give us a call and we’ll tell you what you need. It is worth bearing in mind that some council’s have a surcharge if you need the permit within three days of your application. The cost for a permit ranges from around £20-£60 in general however it is different with each council; we usually contact the local council for the charge details.

Another thing to consider is that different councils have different expiry dates, and it is worth checking when you apply, so you can arrange a suitable collection date.

In general filling up a skip is one of the simplest things a person can do. Throw all your waste in there and call the Skip Company to have it taken away. However, there is always “someone” that thinks there’s no limit to filling a skip or just doesn’t know what the loading limit is. Some believe that having a living room (amount of junk) balance perfectly on top of the garden waste almost as if it was a makeshift version of the “Leaning tower of Pisa” means it is “IN” the skip, no.

Not trying to be a pain but there really is a limit to how much you can put into a skip and for good reason too, health & safety is one its pretty much common sense that a towering junk yard is a health hazard. But other reasons such as how is the skip truck going to lift the overloaded skip back onto its back without spilling the waste?

There are really only 2 ways you can “overload” a skip, one is easier to notice than the other. The first is when the waste is either sitting above the lip of the skip, it may not seem like much but if there is a piece of timber with some nails pointing out and is hanging out of the skip someone is in for a nasty surprise if they aren’t paying attention. The simplest preventative measure is to keep everything inside the skip, under the lip and nothing sticking outward or upward.

The other type of overfilling is slightly unnoticeable and more dangerous, that is overfilling it with heavy waste. This usually means it looks perfectly fine and not “overloaded” but it’s filled to the maximum of cement or concrete or soil. Weight of the skip will be pretty impressive at best the skip lorry might be the one that will be “uplifted”, the pressure on the truck’s axle will cause it to sheer while in transit or while the skip is in midair about to be placed on the back of the truck the chains snap. To prevent this think carefully about what is going into the skip, ask the person you’re hiring the skip from, gauge how much waste you might have and never hire a skip that’s “just enough” try get one slightly bigger.

Remember if in doubt just give us a call!

This is the most interesting topic of them all when it comes to skip hire, mind you it’s a common phrase in Google we can tell you that much. So what actually affects skip hire prices?

The main things that affect prices are:

•	Distance – The journey between you and the nearest depot, after all diesel’s quite expensive these days. The closer you are to the depot the more skip hire options and the more friendly the rates are to the locals. The further away the delivery address is the more expensive the skip will tend to be.

•	Waste type – If its general mixed waste it would come under a standard rate, it pays for the sorting and the taking away of the un-recyclables to the landfill thus taking into account of the landfill tax. If you were only disposing wood for example the rate may change depending on the transfer station and the rate may change favourably.

•	Skip Size / Amount of Waste – Probably the aspect that least affects domestic skip hire but effects commercial skip hire slightly more. The bigger the skip the more expensive it is in some cases. However, hiring a mini skip usually comes out more expensive than a 8yd solely because of the distance, its sometimes not profitable to send out a 2yd more than 5-10 miles and thus will lead to some companies not hiring out at all or charging ridiculous rates for them.

•	Area – This aspect can’t really be explained very well, but we can provide an example. It is much cheaper to hire a skip in Cambridge than hiring a skip in London. It’s almost the same difference when comparing apartment rental rates in London and Peterborough.

That is about as much about skip hire prices there is, there isn’t much to them, Each on there own don’t affect the prices too much but when several of the above factors are considered the prices can vary quite significantly.

Wait & Load

Is one of the many convenient waste disposal methods most skip hire companies offer nowadays, Wait & Load is ideally to accommodate customers who want to hire a skip but do not have a private space to place the skip and do not want to pay for Road skip permits. What happens is the Skip Company (us) will provide a skip to you at the desired location for a fixed time limit where you can load up your waste and we will take it straight away.

The waiting times are usually around 20-40 minutes depending on the driver’s schedule, the distance of the location and the skip size.

This method eliminates the need for a road permit thus extra charges, which means it’s saving you money. However, it usually means you would be rushed for time, it also means you must be present when the skip is there and may need a helping hand to help fill it.

Merry Christmas!!!!

Mini & Midi skips in general can hold approximately 2 tonnes of waste at most, so given their size they can take away a good amount, usually an amount that’s too much to take to the tip yourself and not enough to hire a builder skip for, how convenient.

A lot of people ask this question quite often, due to the fact that when most people ask for these skips the operators almost all the time follow on with “What’s type of waste is going into the skip?” or “Just to inform you sir/madam the large skips have a maximum approx weight limit of 1 ton”.

Now most people would think why only 1 tonne? It’s ideal for a lot of rubbish? Correct, to some extent the large skip is for large amounts of waste or for bulky waste such as furniture but not for heavy waste. This is because the large skip itself is heavy and if we were to make it any heavier than it already is the skip lorry either can’t pick up the skip or the chains will snap half way through.

Large skips range from 10yd to 16yds, usually open top but some have drop down doors they aren’t much different in terms of appearance to any of the other skips. Large skips are more suitable for garage, house or office clear outs, most builders know this and will never hire these skips for any construction work.

This question is asked almost all the time when it comes to skip hire. Everyone has an amount of waste that they need to get rid of but can’t accurately predict exactly what skip size they need.

We know that mini skips for example are suitable for low volumes of waste roughly about 18 to 20 black bin bags. Mainly for small garden or house tidying.

Then we have the 8yd builder skip which as the name implies is used for general builder volume waste. They can hold in around 45 to 60 black bin bags of rubbish and is the general option if you are disposing heavy waste (construction waste or mixed general household waste).

Even with these guidlines the amount of waste one can put in a skip still can vary. Rather than opting for “might be just enough”, you may have potentially more waste than will fit in your skip it usually works out much cheaper to opt for a bigger skip than hire two.
