Your mattress is old and needs replacing but what can you do with your old one? If you care about the environment, the last thing you want is for it to end up in a landfill site, which is what will happen if you dump it in the local tip.
You know what they say, charity starts at home. Offer your old mattress to a friend. You need to employ a little tact here, though, as you could easily offend a friend with your offer or make them suspicious that you’re just trying to palm off unwanted goods so you don’t have to deal with it. Instead, casually mention that you’ve bought a new mattress and don’t want to dump the old one when someone might find a use for it. If your friend wants it or knows someone who might want it, they’ll tell you.
If your mattress has seen better days but still has some life left in it, you could sell it. You would have to pay to have it professionally cleaned first, so you’re asking price will have to take that cost into account. You could sell it online on eBay or locally by putting a notice in a local shop window.
There are a number of charities, from shelters for the homeless to pet rescue centres, that will be happy to take your mattress. They’ll probably only accept it if it has been cleaned, though, so that would be down to you. Consider the cleaning cost an extra charitable donation.
A surprising amount of material goes into a mattress. Quite a lot of people dispose of them by taking them apart and using the stuffing for cushion fillers or they find a use for the fabric and springs. There’s a lot to be said for DIY recycling.
First you need to ensure that the centre actually does recycle mattresses and doesn’t just send them on to the nearest landfill site. A quick call to your local recycling centre will let you know if they’ll recycle it. If not, ask them to tell you the nearest centre that does.
Can’t be bothered to hoist an old mattress on your car, or to try and stuff it into the back with the kids screaming the whole way to the recycling centre? Help is at hand! Hire one of our skips and just throw it on in there. Use this opportunity to get rid of some of your other tat too. Have a good ole spring clean as a celebration of getting rid of that rotten old mattress.
