Plastic Bag Charge to Come to England

In an environmentally conscious move the Liberal Democrats have announced plans for a 5p charge for the use of plastic bags. The charge will only be applicable for large stores and chains, the proceeds of which will be donated to designated charities.

The move is based on the opinion that even though plastic bags are only used for a few minutes, they take hundreds of years to fully degrade. Plastic bags when unsafely disposed of also pose a range of threats to wildlife.

The move is also based on information produced by the Welsh; plastic bags have had a 5p charge in Wales since 2011 and they have since seen a 75% decline in the use of plastic bags. Let’s just hope the results are just as drastic in England.
