A study carried out by Tesco and the Waste and Resources Action Programme has shown the extent of food waste in the UK, both by consumers and supermarkets. It was found that four out of ten apples are thrown away, and that two thirds of the contents of bagged salads are discarded.
Tesco has announced changes in its stores to try and address this problem. The commercial director, Matt Simister admits that there are no quick solutions but some proposals will be implemented quickly. Tesco is to end the practice of two-for-one in bagged salads which encourages consumers to buy more than they want, and also will make changes in their in-store bakeries to improve stock control. ‘Display until’ dates will no longer be used on vegetables and fruit.
It is hoped that other supermarkets will take steps to reduce the shocking problem of food waste in the UK.
