A new study undertaken over two years by Vision 2020; UK Roadmap to Zero Food Waste to Landfill, which is backed by the UK government, councils and retailers, aims to reduce the amount of food waste going into landfill and instead use it to benefit UK households and the environment.

The study estimated that £17 billion could be saved if a total ban on food in landfill was implemented. By harnessing food waste as a valuable resource from homes, business and the public sector, it is estimated that energy solutions for 600,000 homes could be created and a reduction of 27m tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere could be achieved.

The campaign is backed by ReFood, a food waste recycling company and BioRegional, a sustainable business charity and sets a target date for implementation of its framework recommendations by 2020.
