With nearly every council in the UK offering residents a recycling service, we can all do our bit for the environment by sorting our household rubbish into the categories of what can be recycled and what cannot. It can sometimes be a little confusing knowing what can go into regular waste collection and what should go into the different recycle bins, plus some councils may only offer a limited recycling service; this post will help you get started with a few useful tips.
1. Make sure you know what can be recycled and what can’t. Check with the council what kind of service they offer and how regular it is, perhaps see if they will send you a list of what they will accept and what they won’t.
2. It is really important to make sure that you have been provided with all of the appropriate bins for the different types of recyclable material, not using the correct one could get you into trouble.
3. Washing out things like tin cans, glass jars and plastic bottles will prevent nasty smells in your bin, meaning you will need to clean it less; it will also make things easier for the people at the recycling plant.
4. Get into the habit of putting your recycling in the same place in the house, such as in smaller bins on a kitchen side, and take it all out to the larger bins once a day. Such routines ensure that you keep on top of things and help you get used to the added effort involved in sorting your household waste for recycling.
5. Don’t forget about your food and garden waste! If your council doesn’t offer a recycling service for these items, then invest in a composting bin and pop the waste in there, then use it for fertilising your garden.
6. Recycle other household rubbish, such as old furniture, by offering it for free to people who might need it, therefore preventing something else going to landfill.
7. Try to reuse some of your waste yourself. Save cardboard boxes for junk modelling with children, use cleaned glass jars for homemade Christmas gifts or use plastic bottles for taking drinks out on trips etc.
