Everybody likes to customise their home to make it fit their lifestyle, but what do you do yourself on a tight budget? Here are ten really nifty ideas to spruce up your living.
- Front door: Replacing the door is one option, but if that isn’t possible, a bit of paint and a few hanging plants on the wall next to the door really lift it up nicely.
- Brighter lights: Heavy curtains and small windows help keep the heat in, but they also keep the natural sunlight out. An easy fix is to replace all the light fixtures with low energy white LED light bulbs.
- Avoid lightshades: After you’ve replaced all the light bulbs, make sure the old light shades are binned. A much better option is to change them over for inexpensive chrome light bars.
- Fix holes in walls: We all have them, holes left over from countless years of hanging pictures and then moving them again. A bit of white cement from the DIY store does the trick to patch up the holes. Then repaint the walls for that fresh new look.
- Repair peeling wallpaper: To avoid ripping the wallpaper, put some wallpaper glue on a sheet of paper and slide this behind the peeled wallpaper. The remove and simply smooth out bubbles and allow to dry.
- A new kitchen splash back: New tiles or a brushed aluminium sheet along the length of the kitchen cabinet needn’t cost much, and best of all it can be done in a weekend.
- Make your own headboard: Replace your headboard with large flat cushions suspended from a decorative curtain rail above your sitting head height. They are super comfortable, and covers can be changed to match quilt covers.
- Laying a hall runner: The steps and hallways in British homes are often narrow and uninteresting. A hall runner in the centre can make the area seem wider, but choose a contrasting or accent colour for the strongest effect.
- Change the taps: A more modern look can be achieved quite easily; you only need a new tap, a spanner, and some pliers.
- Fix shower grout: Often our shower grout cracks and let’s water into the wall which can cause wall damage. Redoing the grout is very affordable and can be quite satisfying.
