Face a Red Card if you put your Rubbish in the Wrong Bin!

More than a thousand households in Rochdale are taking part in a trial regarding the way they sort their rubbish. Under the scheme, anybody who puts the wrong category of waste into a bin will be censured and their bin will not be emptied. The censure will take the form of a red tag, containing an apology, which will be attached to the offending bin. Those householders who use the bins in the proper manner will receive a green tag containing a ‘thank you’ message.

The council’s environmental services department are hopeful that such cards will both encourage and remind people, improving rates of recycling and preventing the time-consuming contamination of containers which occurs when rubbish is not thoroughly sorted. If the trial, which is expected to last for one month, is successful, the money-saving scheme will be extended to the whole of Rochdale
