UK’s ‘First’ Plastic Bag Recycling Centre Opens

Woolwich in South London is set to play host to what purports to be the first plastic bag recycling centre in the United Kingdom. Operated by PlasRecycle and costing £10.7 million pounds, the facility will open towards the end of 2013.

The plant is designed specifically to deal with awkward plastic items such as carrier bags and certain types of wrapping material. The idea is that recycling such material will cut down on carbon emissions, as well as save space in landfill. What’s more, if all goes according to plan then the plant will create thirty-two new jobs, thereby also helping employment and the local economy.

The development has been praised by both Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Waste Minister Lord de Mauley, who have cited the construction of the plant as a step in the right direction in terms of waste management.
