Food and Drink Landfill Waste Significantly Reduced

A new survey has demonstrated that the amount of waste that is going to landfill sites after use has been significantly reduced when it comes to the food and drink industries. The Food and Drink Federation (FDF), which represents many in the industry, published its figures in February along with WRAP, a campaign group that focuses on packaging.

According to the two organisations, just three per cent of the packaging created by those companies operating in food and drink production made its way to landfill in 2012. This is one third of the figure for when the survey was previously undertaken in 2009 and equates to a massive drop in landfill waste of a quarter of a million tonnes.

The FDF said that the drop in the amount of waste demonstrated that food and drink manufacturers are truly engaged with delivering their own ambitions. The progress must be seen as part of the federation’s own stated goal that its members would deliver no food and packaging waste to landfill sites by no later than 2015.
