Norway says Rubbish to Energy

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to that old piece of packaging you threw in the bin, or the remains of last week’s dinner, Norway’s energy industry could hold the answer. Each year, Norway burns millions of tonnes of household waste from Britain and other countries, to help power homes, schools, businesses and even buses in the capital city, Oslo.

Supporters of the scheme see it as an enterprising way of disposing of some of the many millions of tonnes of waste produced in Europe each year, while critics argue that burning it is a less than ideal way of dealing with waste, even if it does produce energy. Whatever your position, there’s no denying that Norway’s approach to the issue of waste management is innovative. Your old wheelie bin full of scraps and rubbish will never look quite the same again.
