A new initiative has been announced by major UK food retailers working towards goals of waste prevention and reduction.
This follows on from the publication of the British Retail Consortium’s annual ‘Better Retailing Climate’ report which targets increasing sustainability across a number of areas including energy, transport and waste.
The aims of the report are to publish the total food waste figures and work with customers to help them purchase food quantities more suited to their needs, reducing the amount being discarded.
Tesco kicked off the trend by showing off its figures in October 2013, which analysed how much of each product group is wasted, at what stage in the production chain and the amounts thrown away by consumers post purchase.
Figures for food waste and packaging are already being given to WRAP but this method of reporting aims to produce more transparency and outline what the industry is doing to alleviate the situation.
