If possible, put the bin on bare earth so the worms can crawl up into it and help with the composting process. Work out a system of transferring waste from the house to the bin. A small container in the kitchen is often a good choice. Some kitchen waste can be used in the compost bin, but not cooked food or meat. Other usable waste includes cardboard, shredded paper, toilet rolls and annual weeds from the garden. The compost bin should contain approximately half plant waste including fruit and vegetables, and half paper and cardboard. It may take between nine months to a year for the waste material to decompose into beautiful, crumbly compost. Keep topping up, and when it is ready, spread it on your garden.
